Dream start to World Cup qualifying: 7 goals scored, none conceded after two games - VOLLEYCHAMP.COM

The start could hardly have gone any better. The Swiss national team has clearly won its first two games in the qualifying rounds for the 2026 World Cup. After a 4-0 victory against Kosovo and a 3-0 win over Slovenia, both at Basel's St. Jakob-Park, the "Nati" sits at the top of Group B with six points and a 7-0 goal difference.

The starting position

In Group B, Switzerland faces Sweden, Slovenia, and Kosovo. Only the group winner qualifies directly for the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. The runner-up must enter the play-offs. Every point counts, therefore, and a false start would have immediately complicated the situation.

4-0 against Kosovo

For the opener, the Nati showed a focused performance against Kosovo. The match was decided by half-time. Breel Embolo scored twice, underscoring his importance as the focal point of the attack. The team played with purpose, capitalised on their chances consistently, and allowed nothing defensively.

3-0 against Slovenia

Three days later, the confirmation followed against Slovenia. This game was also decided early on. Switzerland controlled the action and gave the opponent hardly any space. Two games, two wins, no goals conceded: A start that builds confidence.

What distinguishes this Nati

Under coach Murat Yakin, the team has continued to develop following their strong performance at Euro 2024. With Granit Xhaka as captain and leader in midfield, a stable defence, and an offence that finishes efficiently, the team appears solid. Younger players are pushing through, and competition for spots is invigorating the squad.

Efficiency in front of goal

Efficiency was particularly striking in both games. The Nati did not need countless chances to score. They took their opportunities, often with the first or second touch. That is a hallmark of good teams: they make a lot out of a little.

For amateurs, this is an important lesson. In your own game, there are often only a few real goal-scoring chances. Those who take them win. And efficiency in front of goal is primarily a matter of technique and calmness in finishing.

October is when it gets serious

In October, two away games are on the schedule: in Sweden and in Slovenia. The duel with Sweden, in particular, should be pivotal. With their strong offensive players, the Swedes are considered the toughest competitor for the group win. A success in Stockholm would be a big step towards America.

Eyes on the 2026 World Cup

The next World Cup will be the biggest of all time: 48 teams, three host countries, and over 100 matches. Switzerland has been present at the last five World Cups. A sixth consecutive appearance is the clear goal.

Become efficient yourself

If you want to make your own finishing more efficient, only one thing helps: practice, practice, practice. Best of all under conditions that mirror the game, i.e., with little time and first-time finishes. With the VOLLEYCHAMP®, you train volleys and first-time finishes in a targeted manner and can measure your scoring rate week after week.

Home strength in Basel

The atmosphere at St. Jakob-Park was also remarkable. Two home games in Basel, two wins: The support of the crowd is a real factor for the Nati. This connection between the team and the fans is an important factor in a long qualification campaign.

We are looking forward to October and are keeping our fingers crossed for the Nati. Hopp Schwiiz!
