Women's Euro 2025: Switzerland to host - VOLLEYCHAMP.COM

In less than eight months, Switzerland will host one of the largest sporting events ever held in the country: the 2025 UEFA Women's Championship. From 2 to 27 July, 16 nations will compete for the title. The groups will be drawn in mid-December. Time for an overview.

Eight venues across Switzerland

Matches will be played in eight cities, spread across German-speaking Switzerland and the Romandie:

  • Basel - St. Jakob-Park, host of the opening match and the final
  • Bern - Stadion Wankdorf
  • Geneva - Stade de Genève
  • Zurich - Stadion Letzigrund
  • St. Gallen - Kybunpark
  • Lucerne - Swissporarena
  • Thun - Stockhorn Arena
  • Sion - Stade de Tourbillon

The short distances are a major advantage: fans can travel comfortably from game to game by train, and on some days, even attend two matches.

The "Nati" with home advantage

The Swiss women's national team is automatically qualified as the host and will play the opening match on 2 July in Basel. The team is coached by Swede Pia Sundhage, who won Olympic gold twice with the USA and is among the most experienced coaches in the world. With players like captain Lia Wälti and Ana-Maria Crnogorčević, the Nati possesses plenty of international experience.

Strong competition

The favourites are clear: England won the last European Championship in 2022, and Spain is the reigning world champion. Then there are teams like Germany, France, Sweden, and the Netherlands. For Switzerland, simply reaching the knockout phase would be a great success. In previous Euro appearances, the Nati was eliminated in the group stage each time.

Why this European Championship is so important

A major tournament in one's own country can make a big difference. Other countries have shown how it's done: after the home Euro 2022 in England, interest in women's football rose sharply there, and attendance numbers in the league reached new records. In Switzerland, too, there are hopes for such an effect. More girls in clubs, more attention for the Women's Super League, and better conditions for players are the goals.

What clubs can do now

For football clubs, the European Championship is a huge opportunity. Anyone who offers targeted trial training sessions for girls in the spring and summer of 2025 can benefit from the excitement. Experience has shown that after a big tournament, many children want to play themselves. It is important that enough coaches and training times are then available.

A playful introduction helps with this. Technique stations where children can shoot and score without pressure provide quick moments of success. With the VOLLEYCHAMP®, even beginners can try a volley because the ball stays steady at the chosen height. That is fun and motivates them to keep going.

Tickets and anticipation

Anyone who wants to experience a game live should keep an eye on UEFA's ticket phases and secure them early, especially for the Nati's matches. The prices are moderate compared to men's tournaments, which also makes the Euro attractive for families.

A festival for the whole country

In addition to the games, fan zones and supporting programmes are planned in the host cities. For many people, it will be the first opportunity to experience an international women's football match in a stadium. Especially for young players, such a visit can be formative: anyone who has once seen a full stadium cheering on their own idols dreams of one day standing down there themselves.

We look forward to a football summer in our own country and will, of course, be following the draw in December closely. Hopp Schwiiz!
